does a machine have to survive causing blunt-force trauma?
I think, rather, a device is something that is just circuitry with minimal moving parts, while a machine is something where mechanical movement is a driving force in its action.

Note this is a different thing to a "Jesus bar" which is a hand-hold on the passenger side of most fast cars. If the driver gets busy with the loud pedals, it is traditional for the passenger to grasp the bar firmly and say its name.
