This means Chicago tests the tornado sirens. It happens every month. I forget every month. Every first Tuesday of the month I hear this, without knowing what the fuck is going on, before I remember 2 minutes later:

I had seen a video of this before, but I wasn't convinced it was real. And now I'm finding out not only is it real, but this is a monthly occurrence people just live with???

the only thing that's on my mind is

what if there's an actual legit tornado in Chicago on the first tuesday of a month? is there some other sort of backup system that goes "no this isn't just a test this is an actual serious problem" or are they just banking on tornadoes hating the first tuesday of any given month?

As someone who isn't from somewhere with tornado sirens, this would immediately make the hair stand up on the back of my neck if I heard it in a video game or movie. Dang!!!

it doesn't help that the Chicago downtown sirens are especially creepy😭, most other tornado sirens have a more normal "whoooooooo" sound

yeah everywhere I've lived with tornado sirens, they've sounded much less eerie, wow

those sound more like "the planes have collided and the armies of madness are invading, trust no one and avoid acute angles"

yeah I was just thinking, I feel like I should remember hearing something this distinctive living in Chicago for a year, but I wasn't living anywhere near the Loop

also somewhat possible it does sound like this down by UChicago and I was just always asleep on the first Tuesday of the month at 10am rofl

As far as I know it's only the loop. Now that I work from home most days I hear more normal sirens

We get just a few of them - more accurately, it's more of a general "serious danger to the public, stay indoors with windows closed and see government channels for information" alert. I don't think I've ever heard it used for real outside of the tests.

This was last year and once the storm passed she climbed down from the window and purred herself to sleep on my lap, so she's okay!

(I think her first reaction when something is scary is to go keep an eye on the scary thing, to make sure it doesn't try anything funny. She does this with storms, fireworks, the vacuum, new people, etc)

One of the things I don't miss about the midwest! Also the constant warning blips on the radio that would play over music to warn us of severe weather/tornadoes and then also the TV overlays warning us of oncoming tornadoes/severe weather!!!
