The poet they probably shouldn’t have sent. I watch anime and am sometimes accused of reading books. I'm writing a long gay giant robot story in verse—probably this millennium's best yuri mecha epic poem, through lack of competition.

'Now praise those names on tombs of steel engraved | And toll this rotting country’s countless bells.'

So good to see this one referenced, from what I gather it's quite obscure. I saw this in my teens and as a fkicng scifi nerd, it was just the right time for this to let a lasting mark on me. Should rewatch this at some point, I hope it's still as beautiful as it was then with a different look.

Yeah, I think in some parts of the world—and as far as I can tell, all of the Anglosphere—it's less well known than other kids' anime from the same era. Though I believe it was dubbed into (at least) three languages besides Japanese, so some broadcasters somewhere must've been interested in licensing it. I've only ever met two or three other people who've seen it, however!

I saw it as an adult, though still some years back. My memory is that it was pretty fun. The premise is strong, in the lineage of things like Jura Tripper, and it rarely talks down to its young audience. It rarely looks quite as good as the shot I picked out here, but some of these full-background stills are strong. When I watched it, the best-quality way was to track down a rip of the HD Japanese re-broadcast, but it's possible that blurays are kicking around these days, I don't know.
