Southey had a complicated relationship with the Gothic ballad craze. He wrote a number, of varying degrees of seriousness, but in "Rudiger" we can see him adapting folk tales and older poems while "smoothing" the meter in his characteristic way. Like a number of poems I'll post this month, it was included in Matthew Gregory Lewis's Tales of Wonder.
