The poet they probably shouldn’t have sent. I watch anime and am sometimes accused of reading books. I'm writing a long gay giant robot story in verse—probably this millennium's best yuri mecha epic poem, through lack of competition.

'Now praise those names on tombs of steel engraved | And toll this rotting country’s countless bells.'

It follows an impoverished Japanese teen and a Chinese immigrant living as property guardians in late-eighties bubble economy Tokyo.

The English translation's prose doesn't sparkle. But it manages to stay transparent and to keep out of the way.

The language barrier between the characters runs through the VN itself.

It proceeds by vignettes, and its tone orbits a quiet desperation. You can watch the two protagonists each working out that the other sits, with them, on society's bottom rung.

And it touches on things like Jing Xiaoran's childhood memories of being sent with his father up to the mountains and down to the countryside.

A few elements strain my patience, and I was hoping it might go for a more eighties feel in its art and music.

But I find it pretty interesting. Haven't finished it yet, mind.

this is not at all obvious in english or japanese, but there's elements i seriously appreciate about how chinese peoples are represented. for example, there's a person who has a cantonese accent to their japanese. then, there's lines that are very different from the japanese/english because the chinese voice actor decided to spice it up and add idioms which is pretty common in chinese writing.

i would say the dlcs are more interesting because it tackles the politics of the 90s much more. alas, i don't think it is translated into english yet.

you can probably tell with the references to what's happening in china that this game is deeply concerned with maoist china too. the game actually has been banned and unbanned in chinese stores because of how political it can be. i was pretty moved by how it dealt with it.
