A broken doll.

It lies, limp against a wall.

There is no light in its eyes.

Day by day, more rubbish is added to its pile.

Eventually, it can't be seen anymore -

Until, one day, a witch passes it by.

Sensing lingering magic, she digs through the pile.

In time, she finds the doll, stained and dirty, little pieces of it broken off here and there - a limb detached, even.

Curious, she stores away the smaller pieces and carries the doll and its limb home.

In time, she cleans and repairs the doll - but light doesn't return to its eyes. Nothing she does brings it back to life.

But that's okay.

She stores it on a shelf, overlooking her study - but, from time to time, she brings it down and hugs it, keeping it in her lap as she works. More and more, often, even, until it's a constant on her lap, a constant by her side.

Until, one day, all of a sudden -

"Why?"

The unexpected voice startles her from her show, and she nearly drops the doll! But she catches it just in time!

"Why what?" she asks in reply.

"Why do you like me?"

...

"Because you're worth it. You brighten up my life."
