which is admittedly not actually a question I've ever been asked, my answer is of course first that we have a local team in the league so it's part of the community culture to care about this.
Sure, then they could point out that's still unusual for people who watch US soccer to follow much more than their own local team, and spend more time with the premiere league, or the spanish la liga, or the bundesliga, or maybe even serie a. You'd probably be accurate to how most people watch soccer in this country.
So let me show you this video, of the current goal of the week of the USL Championship. I watched a bunch of highlights (due to prior commitments, little time last weekend was actually spent watching full games of soccer), and can say confidently that this was the correct choice to win.
That is some signature EA FIFA shit right there. You can practically hear Stewart Robson giving one of his standard instant-replay spiels on a goal like this. "Well, here's the replay, and look how well he slips past the defender, and it's just a change of pace. And when he goes for goal, it's hit with such power and accuracy there's nothing the keeper can do about it. That's a brilliant strike."
Just, the curve. Absolutely spot-on placement. Even in those much-celebrated top European leagues, you don't see goals like this all that often -- no, more common are crosses leading their way to strikers just barely getting their head on the ball over the defenders, tapped-in shots after clever through balls, and any number of tricky setpiece plays. Nothing wrong with any of those, but they don't match the sort of fluidity of movement and quality of vision that lead to plays like this.
Absolutely wonderful goal, and one I take great pleasure in being able to share with you all.
