in ancient greek medicine there was a concept of pepsis, which was a form of rotting like sepsis but unlike sepsis which was bad pepsis was good (e.g. you'd want pepsis on a wound). don't remember where I learnt of this but https://sci-hub.ru/https://www.jstor.org/stable/30132481 has some stuff on it if you're interested
