in reply to @blep's post:

I feel the main reason the pointer cursor started getting used for All Interactive Surfaces is twofold - part because during the early web all interactive surfaces were hyperlinks, and part because websites have significantly more non-interactive space than just about any desktop app

sure but if it's not clear what's interactable without hovering to see what mouse cursor you get, you are doomed from the getgo. esp considering like 70% of web traffic is mobile now, which doesn't even have that

Definitely agree with all this

I think we probably should have an "app" version of HTML/CSS to live alongside the document version that'd work more like the layout engines in Android or presumably Cocoa or whatever, but I don't think it's going to happen and until it does I wish people would realise that nobody outside the company has seen your gorgeous Figma designs and they will not know or care if it's a bit wrong. Just make the functionality work then make it look ok, it's like one hundred times easier than starting with a design but everyone does it every time

I work for a fortune 500 and boy howdy do i hate how everything is seo driven now

literally everything has to be a clickable thing (sometimes a button, sometimes an href styled like a button, sometimes a react Link) that we made using our design system and token libraries. no more css, we're just relying on another team to implement our style changes!!! padding keeps getting bigger, nothing fills the screen anymore, because we need 3/4 different columns of things to click on along with tabbed pages, just for one subdirectory

things that are clickable should probably be s or similar, unless you have a really good reason that they aren’t

you absolutely do not have a really good reason I'm sorry! but your reason is mediocre at best! just make it a button!
