Made by Stephen "increpare" Lavelle and first released on October 5 2013, PuzzleScript is a free open source web-based tool for making 2D grid-based games, with IMO just the right balance of limitations vs flexibility.
PuzzleScript is the secret sauce behind every one of my games in the last decade - it was the only level editor I used for both A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build and Cosmic Express, and A Monster's Expedition was heavily prototyped in PuzzleScript too. My design career literally would not have been possible without it.
As well as using it to prototype all my larger games, I've also made 18 free games with PuzzleScript that you can play in your browser right now:
There's no shortage of other great PuzzleScript games out there. I'll share a few highlights, but this is really just a taster:
- ENIGMASH by Jack Lance
- Vacuum by Mark Richardson
- Rock, Paper, Scissors by chaotic_iak
- The Block Tower by Max
- Chaos Wizard by Ragzouken
- And lastly, check out the works of Rosden Shadow who made a game a day for a truly mind-boggling 87 days in a row
What are your favourite things that PuzzleScript has made possible?
