I suspect it works similarly to how TVTropes worked. You want to look up a Marvel villain cause you ain't a nerd but you don't want to look dumb and then get sucked into it. And since Fandom has turned wikis into a hellsite of ads, they make so much money trying to keep you on there with enticing links all over the goddamn place.
yeah, also like tvtropes I suspect the heroes/villains wikis are "write-mostly"; they're supported by a smallish group of people who make a habit of cataloging all the heroes and villains they see just for the sake of having done it, then people stumble across them because for many B- and C-tier settings, those writeups end up being better than any setting-specific wiki
A surprising amount of Light Novel characters have better entries on the hero/villain wiki than their own wiki. If they even have one that is.
it's bonkers to me how you can do a search for any villainous character from fiction and you'll get their fandom entry for their representative franchise, a fandom wiki for 'villains' and if you're lucky some AU fanfiction fandom sites as well.
