I feel like any time you see people scanlating the afterword notes of Japanese artists in at least semi-pro (doujinshi) context they localize their aesthetic opinions like "if it's a ____ then it's gotta be ____!!". In that spirit, since the theme set up something of an anime context, "If it's a beach episode, then it's gotta be bossa-nova!" And yes, it's the fuckin royal road progression and I make zero apologies for it. As far as I'm concerned, this is what you asked for.

Two renders here. One of them is what this might sound like if you listened to it in Windows 95 on something with adlib support, and the second one is a custom libADLMIDI patch. Both are available to use with foo_midi in foobar2k, which is what I used to render the files. Of the two, I actually slightly prefer the default adlib, as the other one winds up sounding a little too much like OutRun to me -- but you might prefer it for that reason.

The last thing I'd seen that wasn't sports before I saw the compo announcement was actually volume 6 of Ex-Arm which opens with a beach/swimsuit episode. I don't know how I feel about that series, but I do think that it needs more of the lead girls kissing. If you want a manga series that feels like everything Mamoru Oshii worked on at once (but with character designs that look more like they're out of the @aurahack universe), you'll enjoy it. Just stay far away from the anime. Anyway, this doesn't have anything to do with the song, just something that was kind of uncanny in its timing.

If you want the MIDI file, here's a self-hosted link: https://mushroomhill.hopto.org/owncloud/index.php/s/DuPP1qq2IceHxcM (Please let me know if you have any trouble accessing, as sometimes the network setup I have for my filehost can be flaky).

Other things to note:

  • I took about 50 minutes on this. I figured I'd cut it short because working with general midi means taking for granted the instruments and timbres and not having to make too many aesthetic decisions, so using more than the full hour felt like it would be against the spirit of the competition the way I was participating, even if it was well within the rules

  • I think I speak for everyone when I ask who is going to make sure that the sunscreen gets rubbed into the back of intern secretary eggbug's thighs. If that duty falls upon me I will graciously accept
