i think art interpretation is good and fine as long as participants are comfortable with ambiguity and understand that the point of art is not to be translated. "what do you read in this?" is a better question than "what does it mean?"
when someone makes you a sandwich you can't say what it means. taste it! look at it! feel it! use your senses! there's no riddle, it's a sandwich! it means itself! analyze, describe, and deconstruct it if that will improve the experience. but you cannot translate it.
