i think my favorite thing about windows 11's incredibly shitty taskbar update is that they threw out fitt's law, and general-purpose design

where is the start button? it isn't at the corner of the screen, anymore -- an effectively infinite target you can reach by simply moving your cursor in its direction until it stops moving. now it's centered at the bottom, and it moves around as you open/close other applications.

looking at this shit it's like a doctor came into the hospital one day and went "yooo what if we started bloodletting again? i know we tried it before and it didn't work but i'm bored of doing things right and wanna fuck everything up for a while", except instead of being thrown out they were promoted and declared the smartest person in the room.

and yes, i know they put out an update later, so that you could finally move the button back into the corner. "look, we threw out all the old wheels because we were so sure the square ones would work."

i went insane when i saw that. i thought maybe i was the crazy one for thinking that was the most OBVIOUS bad idea in UI design i'd seen, but i was and am right! i am smarter than a company worth (googling microsoft's estimated value, please hold...) 3.029 Trillion dollars and i think you are too! everybody's smarter than them!! we all know making the start button a moving target and having tasks move around the taskbar randomly like a game of musical chairs is a idiot idea!!! GO TO HELL

anyway i installed explorerpatcher which fixes it. but what the fuck

I've heard some claims that this was because W11 was supposed to be a mobile-touch interface first and a desktop interface second, but even in that context does no part of this decision process make sense.

The closest thing a phone has to a taskbar, at least on Android, is a button that os fixed at the bottom-left corner of the screen! Phones don't do the thing Microsoft is claiming! It's so stupid you guys.

Go figure that we then get shit like Microsoft copilot after they've illustrated themselves incapable of good decisions

This is actually the biggest reason I like tiles on full screen start. I know it makes me a heretic, but it effectively turns it into a blown up desktop that looks cleaner, where everything has a set position, that can be summoned with one button with no consequences to your window arrangement.

God, all of this, I literally paid for StartAllBack to bring back the Win10 taskbar because 11's bothers me so much

Like, I never liked the Chromebook approach of app icons moving around the taskbar because they're centered, but Win11 is even worse because at least ChromeOS keeps the launcher icon on the left

Though, funny enough, I just checked the Win11 taskbar and it seems like they've actually added back all the settings I care about... but I still won't use it, both because I still don't like the pointless size increase, and because it still has other major annoyances like a total lack of contrast on the currently-running app

and you STILL can’t put it at the top of the screen!
like, i’m a proponent of putting it up there because, as browser tabs are traditionally at the top, your apps may as well be kinds of tabs which are at the top. i got used to it honestly.
