Someone on Tumblr is spreading the idea that CRTs emit gamma rays and it hit the science corner of Blue sky and it's been nice having something funny to read while I drink my coffee this morning

And you would navigate around this very small town, and you had like a radiation detector that would go up and down depending on where you were or what direction you were looking

But I guess the goal was to find the source of the radiation and it ended up being a laptop or something in a building somewhere, so the idea that computers are dispensers of death rays has been around as long as I can remember

Does anyone remember that? The name of it? It'd be fun if it was on the Internet Archive, I would like to play it again

CRTs genuinely can produce X-rays. How much they ever produced is unclear; the heydey of CRT televisions, the 50s and 60s, were a time of many utterly unfounded causes celebre, and it's never clear how much of the mass communication that resulted from them was just due to corporations, fully steeped in "no publicity is bad publicity" mindset, leveraging whatever latest nonsense the public had pounced on that month. In any case, this goes back to at least the 50s.
