so some things I have been able to determine related to the GPU enclosure I got for my wife's mac mini

  • the fan is broken due to cable damage. someone with better cable repair skills than me might be able to fix this but I don't think it's worth the effort. I've known this basically the whole time

  • the GPU itself is broken in some unclear way. I stuck it in my big workstation gamestation pc and got a bios error related to GPU issues. no idea if its reparable but it is probably not worth its cost to do so at this point in time. I wouldn't be surprised to find I was sold a lemon knowingly

  • the original power supply actually is still good, which I confirmed with the paper clip test

  • the board on the enclosure itself is ...????

I've ordered a replacement GPU because the market is no longer plagued by shortages and models from a year or two out are still perfectly good to use, but I'm worried that the main board itself might still be hosed in a way that makes the whole thing unusable. In that case I might need to get a new board and a new case for it, which would mean that I've fully theseused the equipment. I actually kinda like the simple-but-sleek look of the box (to be clear, it's one of the Sonnet boxes designed for Macs) so I'm hoping that the GPU is the weak link in all of this, but I won't be confident in that conclusion until after I get that GPU.

But it'll be a better (more powerful and more efficient/less bulky!) GPU so it's not the worst thing in the world
