I try very hard not to engage in the take economy, but I saw someone on another platform say that GDQ is bad because speedrunning is a hobby of the aristocracy.

My brother in christ do you know how many speedrunners are underemployed trans people in their 20s

do these people think that speedrunning came about because the people who do it owned a lot of games

Yeah, 100%

It's very much "these people do things in their spare time that I don't do, therefore they must be crazy". At least this is more understandable--i'm assuming this take is coming from someone who believes the speedrunners are out there doing all the usual stuff AND speedrunning on top of that, which you would indeed need aristocratic levels of wealth to do. (You'd have to hire people to do a bunch of stuff for you.)

No, they're just weird and counterculture.

(That's good, as far as i'm concerned, and it's not like this is the first counterculture movement to exist... but...)

I do have thoughts about how GDQ as a company profits from unpaid labor, but that's a broader issue with fundraising in general.

Speedrunning is about buying one used video game and playing it for seven to twenty years. It is the gaming equivalent of creating sturdy workwear out of vintage clothes.

why do the takes lately always seem to accuse completely random things of being either bourgeois, #fromlebadcountry, or pedophillic? i mean the second kind of take is really useful for rooting out horrible racists but man, all of the takes are like this.
