I was always afraid
of the next card

the psychic would turn
over for us—
                              Forgive me
for not knowing
how we were

every card in the deck.

A Note from the Editor
Today is Love Conquers All Day. “I am perhaps overly superstitious, and I have been known to use oracles. I love this poem’s playfulness, and its distilled conversational quality, its mode of address. I quote this poem as an epigraph in my play Becky Nurse of Salem, a play that, among other themes, explores the cost of using invisible help from the spirit world to secure love. This poem does so much in only eight lines. I love how Liu moves precisely from the I to the us, the me to the we. I’m so moved and convinced by the idea of two people in love being every card in the deck.” - Guest Editor Sarah Ruhl.
