The show isn't my thing personally, but I've seen this argument a lot and at least to me after a quick look at some of the other stuff made by the main director/writer, it really feels to me that this is an aesthetic they just like personally. Does this person enjoying a general vibe or aesthetic or character design philosophy that appeals to a certain type of fandom on tumblr/twitter automatically mean those design choices are an attempt to manipulate their audience? I feel like that's overreaching a bit and assuming ill will when that likely isn't the case, and I feel like it's OK to make a show with an aesthetic that tailors to a less savory part of fandom just because it's something you personally want to make. Toxic fandom trends and attributes shouldn't get in the way of genuine passion if the two happen to overlap. I understand why one would make this leap in logic and it makes sense on the surface though.
