highlights from "would you rather run into a man or a bear in the woods" discussion last night:
- what kind of bear
- (I spoke at length about the relative dangers of bears by species, life stage, time of year, etc)
- consensus was "randomly picked from total North American bear population" (man is randomly picked from total North American man population)
- look realistically I've gone hiking alone while female-presenting and there were many times I ran into men and the encounter was that I said "hey" and he said "hey" and we kept walking
- stranger danger is so overstated, the real life threat is the man you come home to after the hike
- this is also true for bears actually, unless you're unlucky enough to draw a polar bear it's usually just captive or human-habituated bears you should worry about
- so really most of the time you're fine with either
- but if a guy is on a damn mission to get women to say "ohhh now that you put it like that, I finally appreciate how safe and protective men are," if a man has opinions about "man or bear" to the point where he is posting gory bear attack images at women who chose wrong, I would definitely rather run into a bear than him
