There's a lot of shades of red. Some people might have gone with "Crimson Axe", but Vermilion Axe was ultimately the way to go. Vermillion has been from antiquity considered the color of blood and the Vermilion Axe's name is a direct reference to the blood they are willing to shed. Crimson has a similar, more modern connotation, but given the setting, we erred on the side of history.

Aaron was a joy to write. He's such a large ham about all this and his angry, passioned self-righteous is an easy thing to pour energy into as a localizer. Notice, also, how even Ionia's nemesis is part of the tree motif. It is the axe that will fell the blighted tree. This is true in the Japanese version also and only increased our confidence in terms like "Yggdrasilian Throne".
