He's not necessarily the strongest, right now, but he's my oldest Splatoon OC so he's definitely got the most staying power! Plus, I think he has a lot of neat little quirks that just don't come up a lot (if ever), so it's a good opportunity to mention them!
Mercury has a pretty nasty scar on his forehead from an injury he got when he was a child. There was no real lasting damage (besides emotional, perhaps), but he doesn't like to talk about it. Or have it mentioned. Thankfully, his big bangs cover it up. They also get in the way of his eyes half the time, but it's a small price to pay for privacy. His cousin nags him about the bangs, but she's always been that way so it's easy to tune out, lol.
And speaking of his childhood... Mercury is actually the product of his mother getting cold feet shortly before marrying and ending up pregnant after a one night stand. They agreed to carry it through and Mercury took after his mother enough for it to not be too terribly obvious, but he ended up taking the brunt of the consequences for the turmoil brought on by his mother's actions, unfortunately. He's since been disowned, but he never felt close to either of them, so it was more freeing than hurtful to get kicked out. Plus his cousin was very quick to swoop in and offer him a place to stay indefinitely while he figured things out! He also doesn't know anything about his mother's cheating or that the man who helped raised him wasn't his biological father.
Finally, Mercury is agender! It's not obvious because of the pronouns, but he just didn't feel like going through the hassle of trying to adjust to new ones when his current ones didn't cause him discomfort anyway. It took him a while to figure out, but thanks to a passing complaint and a little information from Pyrite, he gets to experience the satisfaction of understanding himself a little better. It doesn't come up a lot because his feelings on gender are that he doesn't care about gender, but if you ask, he'll say he's agender. And if it makes him a little bit happy to say it, that's his own business.
