Working on art. Working on a lot. Tired. Just want to look at OCs. Decrepit by modern internet standards, I guess (31).

i don't have much to post mostly because i'm still in the process of doing studies and trying to unmuck my mind from this artblock, but here's a tiny little doodle of mercury from the other day

i really don't pay too much attention to the canonical lore logistics and just follow my heart when it comes to who is doing what in hero mode, but. captain mercury here is making his case for why he should be the one getting to do some dangerous space battle against that damn bear and not some child soldier who fell into their laps—ethics and safety reasons, of course—there's no reason the OCEA squid would have any personal grievances to settle here

i didn't reference at all so if the captain outfit is off that's why. call it mercury's personal flair.

ajdskds i have a bit of a hangup about posting studies of things without proper attribution and i'm not sure i would be "allowed" to share some of my references, haha. but i've been working on torsos and looking to the morpho books (michel lauricella) for a lot of it!

but thank you! his expression is the best part, imo. mercury isn't terribly expressive except when it comes to being annoyed or angry so i use him as a vessel to practices those sort of faces 😂

ahaha it's okay lol. I should probably do actual studies too

My character Cheren is sort of similar, they're not supposed to be super expressive (and never smiles) but just drawing a blank expression/very similar expressions all the time is a little boring, and I only end up drawing things that'd be notable.... So they end up looking a lot more expressive in my art than they would be normally lmao.
Still is mostly just tired/confused/annoyed though

yeah! studies are... not difficult, but they're not as fun as drawing little guys!

ohhh yeah. mercury is also not a smiler, haha! he's got that grumpy demeanor and comes off as pretty surly to anyone who isn't close to him... though he does have a certain softness for his friends. but i get what you mean! it's not always that interesting drawing the same sort of expression when you have a more reserved character, and their being reserved just makes it all the more fun to actually push their expressions and see how far you can get without it being actually out of character for them!

I often try to sneak in some learning here n there (especially in fanart) just so I'm still improving and trying new things, but with studies I feel like I'd have to make myself sit down and do 'em lol

There are some subtler differences in expression I need to work on, but getting to draw them with other more expressive characters (or even just characters who express differently) helps

realistically, any time you draw you're learning, but when it feels like i'm hitting a wall and struggling a lot, sitting down to do some studies usually helps at least some

and yeah! the intricacies of expressions are something i really want to learn and develop for myself. there's just so many different things to learn about when it comes to art, it's hard to sit down and just focus on the one thing!
