If you are queer and white, whiteness is still operating in your favour. Yes, you are disadvantaged by being queer in this fucking transphobic, homophobic, queer-phobic society. And ALSO, you have privileges that queer POC do not have. You didn't ask for those, but you have them.
I was reading through the list of Fash who were brought before the court for going on these race riots, and I saw a pair of white men from Hartlepool, described as "partners" (living together, not business partners AFAICS), who went out fairly early in the chaos to violently vent their hatred of Muslims, refugees, brown and black people.
Yeah, white gays can be rascists and fascists too. They can go out with other white Fash and because they don't look brown, the white Fash won't immediately attack them in the same way they were targeting and beating up solitary South Asian, black and brown people on the street.
Congrats, white gay Fash couple, you got unearned visual safety from the other white Fash rioters.
Do you think they would have given a pass to a brown gay couple who appeared on their side of the line?
You have a visual pass that would enable you to move more freely through the current race riots than queer POC. You didn't ask for it. You may not want it. But you have it.
It's mostly up to you what you do with that. I saw photos of a counterprotest with a banner reading "Gays Against Racism", being held by (I think) a white person. Some people will take their ability to leave the house and travel ATM, without having to worry so much about being targeted for bring brown or black, and they will do that kind of thing.
But for the love of God, do NOT make your feelings about your own whiteness the problem of POC. Leave us out if it if you feel uncomfortable because someone is pointing out things like: white queer people benefit from whiteness. It is not our problem if you feel defensive about unearned privileges. It is up to you to figure that out, and if you can't do that in a contained way, at the very least stay out of our comments, mentions, etc.
