It's been real strange to watch the word "freak" start to be used negatively in the last few years. When I read it, it does not register in my brain that way for even a second, to the point that the sentence itself looks weird. I see nothing negative there. One of the funkiest most iconic songs is about a woman who is a SUPER freak. And i stan her and all fellow freaks.
