see the nice thing about AIM['s affordances as i understood them in 2004] was that when i was online, i was Online, in a way that existed in real contrast to Offline. and for that momentary period of being Online, i wanted to chat! and discord just doesn't have that same kind of signaling because everyone is """online""" all the time. and sometimes it's saturday night and i just want to chat for like half an hour or whatever, with other people who are also Online to chat. yet i'm also convinced that nobody wants to chat like that anymore š¶

This is perpetually a problem since I use Discord to communicate with my students, who will message me with time-sensitive questions at random times and I have to interrupt whatever Iām doing.
oh no this would drive me batty! Back In My Student Days we had office hours and email if you were lucky... i cannot imagine having an always-on DM relationship with an instructor.
The flip side is, of course, that I can never get my students to come to office hours.
