"i have done a couple bad things"

number of years i have lived on this earth
over 30

edit: this is a known tauri dev bug – see [bug] macOS dev window incorrectly launching within full-screen editors... opened over a year ago 🥲

  1. I am working in a fullscreen terminal emulator. On macOS, this manifests as its own "desktop". (I am using wezterm if that matters. I have also experienced this with kitty.)
  2. I run a command from the terminal emulator that spawns a new window for the application I'm working on.
  3. macOS kicks me back over to the non-fullscreen regular desktop.
  4. I go back to the fullscreen terminal emulator desktop.
  5. The window that I have just spawned is there!!!
  6. In order to move this newly spawned window back to the normal desktop, I have to fullscreen it and then unfullscreen it.
  7. WOULDN'T IT BE NICE IF IT JUST SPAWNED IN THE CORRECT PLACE OR AT LEAST DIDN'T FORCIBLY KICK ME OVER TO THE OTHER DESKTOP WHERE IT DID NOT EVEN SPAWN THE WINDOW

in reply to @thricedotted's post:

this is one of those papercut things where i'm like dude it's my day off and i'm trying to get a little done on a silly side project that's been hanging around for months but i cannot deal with this AND debugging a flaky MIDI connection at the same time it is simply too much for my NERVES

I swear I got a Mac for the first time like a decade ago and it was wonderful and easily the best computer experience I'd ever had and somehow now Gnome and Windows are both much nicer than the current version of macOS, I don't understand how they managed to mess it up so badly

it's not great! the good/bad news is that after opening some other apps from the same terminal and having them spawn on the correct desktop, i realized it might have to do with the specific development flow rather than macos window management... and found a bug report that's been hanging out unresolved for a year. oof.

the good thing is that if you find the multi-desktop system confusing, you can just turn on Stage Manager and have a different confusing window-grouping system!

i mean you can't turn off the multi-desktop thing, you just have both now and they don't really make any sense together but at least it's different 🤷
