"i have done a couple bad things"

number of years i have lived on this earth
over 30

so is screen time on ios actually useless??? for over a week i have been trying to set up an app to have a time limit, and for over a week it's been COMPLETELY USELESS. the app still opens. it is set to be blocked after a certain amount of time and the little toggle to block it is activated and a passcode should be necessary to unlock it. but screen time itself reports that the app has been used for e.g. 7 hours even though the time limit was set to 5 hours, and the app is still unblocked past the time limit.

i have restarted the device, upgraded to the latest ios. the screen time app limit just seems to not fucking function on this app. is there another app we can use that performs the same function that actually works? please help me my marriage1 is falling apart. boosts welcome.

  1. i am not married but i am going slowly insane for reasons.

weird! I've never used App Limits personally, so I wouldn't know. a quick google suggests that it's been broken for many people for a few months though. hopefully Apple has it on a bug tracker somewhere.

nothing else on iOS has the permissions to block apps like that, unfortunately. the suggested workaround involves signing entirely out of iCloud and back in, but I'm not sure that'd even work in this case, because that's supposed to be for like parent/kid limits, not ones you set for yourself on your own device. Also make sure your Photos app doesn't have anything waiting to upload if you do that, because anything not uploaded can be lost when you turn iCloud Photos off and on as part of the reset.

every single apple support thread that has come up has been... not promising 😮‍💨 it's probably worth trying out the iCloud log out/in, if only to say we tried it. and helpful to confirm that screen time is the only thing that can really do what it's... supposed to do

screen time just breaks for me occasionally. there was a period of time a few months ago when it thought i was browsing youtube.com for 24 hours each day. this week it thinks i used wikipedia.org from 3pm sunday to 5am monday. no idea how to fix it unfortunately
