Clarice Lispector can write, and like literally nobody else can. It often takes me 5x longer than usual to get through a Lispector book because of the sheer density of her prose, but the experience of reading her is beautiful and overwhelming in a way unlike anything else I’ve encountered

It’s incredible! Honestly I don’t understand how she was able to write the way that she did, how she was able to do so in a way that feels so radically unique and put so much into the text, how she can be overwhelming by the force of her prose alone
plus this is in translation too, right?? like, huge, huge props to the translator; it's very unlikely i will ever get to experience clarice lispector's writing in portuguese, and yet the translation — i have to assume — is faithful to that power
Oh absolutely. I’ve mostly read Bolaño and Lispector but I’ve been really enjoyed New Directions’ translations more widely, I think they work with really good translators.
Clarice’s work is especially interesting to me because everything I’ve read by her has a totally different translator, and yet there’s this consistency among them, they’re so obviously and unmistakably her work in terms of style and rhythm regardless of who she’s interpreted through
It’s unclear to me if she knew she was dying when she wrote this, but it certainly feels like she did, like she was throwing her entire being into what she was writing. It’s such an incredible book and I’m not even halfway
