the amount of used crypto mining equipment on Craigslist is really making me wish there was something we could do to repurpose them and put the ASICs to actually-good use, what a fucking waste

it's a microcosm of the larger nightmare of late capitalism. in the time it took me to write this comment, a factory in south china produced 5,000 pairs of sunglasses. they will be put into plastic bags shortly and adorned with paper tags. a thousand gallons of diesel will be used to get them to the US. they will sit in a warehouse for six months, then be sold to a dollar store, where they will be purchased, break the moment they're removed from the bag, and be discarded.
all those plastic pellets could have simply not been used to make something that has absolutely no function, and now that they're 5,000 pairs of broken sunglasses in a landfill, we can never get those resources back
nor can we ever get back all the oil or the co2 used by those mining farms
none of the piss can be taken back out of this pool
