i bought a new router so the wireless network is reset to new stuff and lena went to turn the smart light she has in her office/our living room off and it was on the old network

anyway i walked into the living room and she's standing next to the lamp as it's blinking on and off and i'm like what the fuck is going on here and she's like "the lightbulb is in pairing mode" and smart home stuff is so dumb, man

reminds me of the time I got some smart light bulbs to experiment with, fitted them in our kitchen, and I call Misty out to see them and she flicks them on and off experimentally with the light switch… just enough times in rapid succession to factory reset them, which makes them start flashing at 100% brightness instead of the 30% they were on previously, at like 7pm in winter, dazzling us both

that was the point at which I gave up on smart light bulbs

in reply to @erica's post:

I got some smart outlets a few years ago thinking how convenient it would be to be able to turn lamps on/off from my phone. I forgot that, 1) I don't always have my phone on me in my home, and 2) by the time it takes me to open the app and turn on/off the lamp, I could just stumble into the room and do it myself.

Then, I thought maybe I could do something with the scheduling features, but nothing came to mind. So guess who has a 4-pack of smart outlets in a box.

I found the scheduling is pretty nice to put a light on just before my alarm goes off in the mornings - sometimes I wake up just with the light, and that's a lot more pleasant than the alternative. And being able to dim the light in the evenings is nice too.

That said, I have exactly one (1) smart light at home at the moment, and I'm glad I don't have any more!
