nineteen. writer, musician, linguist, former math major, aspiring fallen angel. i talk about gundam 00, among other things.

i recently acquired raws of aoi kizuna, a gundam 00 manga anthology that i've always wanted to translate for myself. i started with sumeragi's chapter (because i love her...! and because it has the best tieria content), and my scanlation is pretty much done, but... i don't want to do sfx. >_>

Two manga panels with handwritten sound effects in Japanese.

i don't have to, and i haven't in the past, but i wanted to step it up a little bit this time! i want to be putting out high quality stuff! but it's a lot harder than it looks... the problem is that it's so fun to edit the original sfx out, and then it's stupid hard to 1) figure out a corresponding english sfx that doesn't sound stupid 2) edit the new sfx back IN. in attempting this, i've discovered a newfound frustration with english onomatopoeia. (they all sound so dumb, every single one! how do we live like this?) no wonder i'm not a comic artist.

this chapter is so good, though. i've always liked sumeragi, but i think reading through this so thoroughly in order to translate and typeset it really gave me a renewed appreciation for her character.

i was going to say that i think there comes a time for everyone where you look in the mirror and realize to yourself that "SFX: drink pouring" isn't doing it for you anymore and that you must embrace the world of silly-looking noises but also thinking about it i have literally no idea how one would transcribe the sound of a drink pouring into a glass with ice in it. is the letter R in there? is that an R type of sound? ...godspeed and good luck.
