void stranger is maybe the starkest example i've ever seen of a game where...it's not always fun. and people are often quick to blame a game being unfun on the devs being incompetent or something, except there are aspects that are so obviously and dazzlingly well constructed (even when they're not unequivocally "good" either) that it's just nonsense to act like the creators aren't smart or don't understand what they were doing

which, y'know, also means they're pranking the player on purpose sometimes, or setting up scenarios where they know some people are likely to own the hell out of themselves because it's basically impossible to actively think about every layer of the game mechanics at the same time. and even when that's not happening sometimes you're just being left to struggle on your own. the game never reaches out to assure you that you're close to something exciting or cool.

i, of course, have become the kind of deranged contrarian who thinks "fun" is deeply overrated, so the sense of suffering and doubt is also part of the charm. obvious goty
