Michael Jackson is the undisputed King of Pop, but if you put a gun to my head and asked me who was the closest to actually contending for the title, it was Britney Spears.
I've heard so many people say Taylor Swift could contend for the title, but every single song I've heard of hers sound like they were made in a laboratory to be precisely poppy enough to not only hit charts, but also maintain the status quo of what "poppy" music sounds like. Certainly popular, but not challenging the genre in the slightest like Michael Jackson and Britney Spears did.
