Heck yeah, 3 node proxmox cluster for all my self-hosting shenanigans

Screenshot of a Proxmox cluster, with 3 nodes, and several running VMs

Everything's hooked up to a NAS running NFS in the background. As soon as I get the cheapo TPLink 10 gigabit switch I ordered, the storage network will be separated from the rest of my home network.

I first saw VM Live Migration back on VMWare ESX way back in like 2003 and it felt like absolute magic, so it feels really cool to have the same thing on my home network now. The main node is jbrown, and it also runs opnSense as my home network router, with a bunch of network devices mapped directly into the VM (which was a chicken/egg problem to get setup originally), so it's really the only thing that can't move around.

I ended up just doing plain Ubuntu on our giant home NAS that is responsible for almost everything, as much as I’d love to have a couple other boxes that could handle the same load it’s just not practical in terms of space and power and noise. The only other boxes I run in the rack now are 2 HP Pavilion 290 slim desktops because they have Intel QuickSync which makes them excellent Plex boxes (though only one runs plex).

I've gradually hobbied my way into being an actual sysadmin and I kinda hate it, but I guess I'd rather do this than pay a bunch of folks for arguably worse service. It started with a surplus Dell running a bunch of containers for Nextcloud and junk, and now we're here πŸ˜…

Thankfully the only real power-hungry thing in my rack is the surplus Supermicro box running opnSense, and it's "only" about 70 watts. The other two Proxmox nodes are Ryzen 2200s that idle at about 30 watts, the NAS is about 50 watts with hard drives, plus a couple switches. I've been keeping my eye out for something cheap with QuickSync for Plex, but so many of those smol desktops get snatched up quick off eBay! 😭
