i was going with my fiance to a place in east tennessee where i had led caving trips when i was in college. as we were driving up we saw that the hill was overflowing with crude oil — black sludgy ooze — and that i didn’t have a change of shoes with me. the latter was the much more pressing issue so i searched on my phone for a thrift store nearby without success. saw some people laying down levee bags around the mouth of the cave to keep the oil from flooding it. the farmer who owned the land it was on didn’t really care but there was an ecologist who was really concerned about cave crickets.
