shouts out to Chicago Tenants Union for putting up a flyer about the Fair Notice Ordinance on my corner this week
THE STORY SO FAR:
last year he didnt give us the required notice for a rent increase, and when we told him he fucked up, he said “oh that was a typo in the letter, actually i meant the increase would be effective august 1st instead of july 1st” — FIRST MISTAKE — we said ok fine. sent us a new lease for 2023/08/01-2024/07/31 with the increase added. but our old lease actually was due to end june 30th, so we didn’t have a lease for the month of july, and since he claimed he made a typo instead of admitting that he violated the fair notice ordinance, he forgot to charge us july’s rent! lol.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS AS OF LATE:
he just emailed us this week to say he’s raising the rent again, effective july 1st. fine and expected and we’re hoping to move soon anyways. i anticipated that he would fuck up again and forget that since we’ve now been here over 3 years he needs to give us 120 days notice (he missed it by 3 days. oops!), so i was counting on being able to use that to negotiate a shorter term agreement to give us more flexibility. what i didn’t anticipate was that he would forget that, in last year’s confusion, he had bumped our lease back by a month, now to start on august 1st. oops! so now i gotta say “hey david, actually our lease isn’t up til the end of july, so we’ll continue paying our current rent” and then when he fixes it “hey david, actually you need to give 120 days notice, so we’ll continue paying our current rent”
landlords are truly god’s stupidest animals
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:
