I've got an MPC Live II and I have a lot of sound expansion packs for it. Most of my uses for the MPC fall out of the typical genres Akai caters to as well as what makes up a big chunk of their user base. As such, a lot of the genres are things like: trap, hip hop, boom bap, rnb, and the occasional edm / house. Even if you're not into some of these genres, the drum kits / sound kits are really fun to play around with. I'm not big into trap myself, but this little beat I whipped up in all of like 20 minutes I think is pretty fire. Most of the time I spent was trying to pick out vocal stabs from the pack that could fit in the beat I had made. I think it sounds decent enough, but there's still more micro-tweaking I could do to line things up better I think.

The new firmware update to the Waldorf Iridium is so damn good and adds a lot of flexibility to what is already an incredibly versatile synthesizer! The update adds:

  • 2 new noise sources: pings and geiger
    • pings is like a filter ping-esque sound
    • gieger is very clicky, like a geiger counter
    • both can be heavily modulated including how often they pop or click
  • incorporation of a community request which is full blown signal routing for the effects!
    • effects used to just be up to 5 in series, but now you can do series, parallel, and anything in-between as well as being able to modulate the effects lanes volume and panning!

I finally broke down and snagged a Roland JD-990 (cough like I knew I was eventually gonna do cough). It came today in one of the absolute worst packing jobs I've ever seen. I honestly thought this thing was gonna be in pieces when I opened the box. I recorded an unboxing video and will have that uploaded later, but I can share the photos of the condition of the unit. It's so damn minty it may as well have come from the original box! It also came with one of the JV expansion cards even though it was listed as coming with any. But not just any JV card, THEE JV card that any one ever seems to care about; the Vintage Synth card. That card alone goes for about 300 dollars these days. I talked this guy down a good bit on this synth just for starters (which is part of why I ended up buying it). Prices have become so overinflated recently it's hard finding deals on stuff in general. Factoring in the card makes this already great deal an absolute steal! I'm so excited to getting this puppy integrated into my studio setup!!!
