olivia taters was a twitter bot made by rob dubbin in 2013. dubbin said at one point he was trying to write a bot that would sound "oracular" but couldn't quite get it to work, yet noticed that there was something about the way it concatenated text that made it sound, if i recall correctly, young and enthusiastic? confident? and so was born olivia, who was like... a robot teenager, basically. again, iirc, it was set to scrape certain hashtags (particularly related to popular music acts like 5 Seconds of Summer) and recompose the text into new tweets. typical bot stuff, except olivia was special. 97% of the nonsense olivia spat out seemed pretty cogent, in the way young excited people on twitter can be nonsensically cogent, with 2% being true nonsense, and 1% being some bonkers shit that is burned into my brain forever but which i am not putting in this post because i don't want to put a content warning on it. anyway the point is there was a window of time when i could not tell whether olivia was a bot or an actual teenager, and basically everyone i introduced the bot to had this same experience. then as time passed and the landscape of twitter changed, olivia started talking more like an irritated conservative father, in addition to undergoing various defunct periods, and now she is gone forever. rip olivia taters
