did you know that several successful attempts were made in the cold war to operate a nuclear reactor aboard an aircraft, on both sides? it ultimately went nowhere further because putting a nuclear reactor in a situation where it could be shot down is, generally, considered rather inadvisable

at least the us had also people work on a nuclear powered open loop engine which would spout radioactive particles out of its exhaust yehaw!
glad they only tested it for a bit and didnt decide to push on and have those flying in high altitude nonstop
