ISBN-13 codes all begin with the same three numbers (978) which is the country code for Bookland, a made-up country; itβs done this way to satisfy requirements of the GS1 EAN barcode standard, while avoiding having to recreate thousands ISBNs (or bother coding editions of published books by country at all).
