re: last reblog (Cohost So White: A Comprehensive Record of the Matter of Race on Cohost.org): here's something you, as a white person, can do if you see someone being racist or Weird In The Way White People Get Weird about racial issues on here: report them and tell them to shut up

if you just scroll past, they don't have any reason to stop. give them pushback. make sure they know everyone is looking at them with disgust, including their assumed silent majority

if you want a community you are a member of to be a welcoming place for minorities, it is not enough for you to be passively anti-racist. you have to be actively anti-racist. stamp that shit out. make it an unfriendly place for bigots and those lending their support to bigotry.

I guess that's maybe one downside of cohost's no-algorithm design: If you have done a good job curating your follows, you will only see people being racist secondhand via people talking about that/posting screenshots, and at that point seeking out those posts is just a massively higher barrier to action than seeing some racist shit on your feed directly.

I have been reading Malcolm Harris' history of California and it (understandably) spends significant time on the Black Panther Party. I am reminded of this quote it included from Huey Newton:

As far as I’m concerned the only reasonable conclusion would be to first realize the enemy, realize the plan, and then when something happens in the black colony—when we’re attacked and ambushed in the black colony—then the white revolutionary students and intellectuals and all the other whites who support the colony should respond by defending us, by attacking the enemy in their community. Every time that we’re attacked in our community there should be a reaction by the white revolutionaries; they should respond by defending us, by attacking part of the security force.

It goes without saying that Cohost is an infinitely smaller stage than the upheaval of the 60s and 70s - but the point remains. Action cannot only be passive support of minority voices in their efforts, it must be active defense in white-majority spaces.
