futuristic racing games are usually either "pointy rockets go very fast" or "literally just Mad Max" but what I want is something that envisions a sci-fi street racing/tuning subculture and really goes the extra mile to fill out the setting

if Wipeout is the slick high-tech international racing event, show me what bored teens in that universe get up to with modded hoversleds and several miles of disused canal network

Inertial Drift is basically Initial D but.. slightly into da future. I like the controls a lot—you steer with the left stick and drift with the right stick, and every car handles pretty differently.

I thought the cars having no collision was weird at first (it's explained in-story as a car safety feature from da future. you can still bump into walls though), but the game leans more towards Leaderboards than anything else

yeah! ever since I ran across the N64 pod racing game I’ve wanted to do something in that vein with a modern engine—you could make it look so good. main obstacle to this is that I don’t play racing games and don’t know the first thing about the mechanics, so I guess what I really want to do is the graphics for somebody else’s racing game.
