Jupiter Hell including a variety of options to turn off (or limit) the main character's voice is an extremely welcome feature, but it's interesting that their primary concern seems to be the prevalence of cussing and not the fact that this guy talks like if Duke Nukem grew up on Reddit. You can't just say shit in a nineties action movie voice and have it be a 'quip', dude. There needs to be a nugget of wit. A morsel of wordplay.

Given the game's lineage, I figure folks will be quick to blame the meme-ification of the Doom comic (rip and tear, huge guts, etc etc), but like... the Doom comic is notorious because a lot of it is fucking weird. Doomguy says the most baffling things in that comic. He ricochets back and forth between floral eloquence and caveman-speak every second page. There's an environmentalist paragraph that drops out of nowhere.

I dunno where I'm going with this. I guess it's just a really illuminating example of the fact that even intentionally stupid writing has to be a little bit smart.

For the most part I thought they did a pretty good job, a lot of Issac's dialog is repurposed from other characters where it makes sense. Like he's now informing his compatriots of what he's gonna do rather than them instructing the talented engineer how to do his job. And it honestly helps at least one character come across as less aggressively suspicious too, which I think is great for first time players.

It is a big change though and there's for sure dialog that probably could/should have been trimmed down.

yeah, i don't think its a bad change really for a number of reasons. pragmatically i imagine one reason is to keep the first one consistent with isaac's character in the 2nd/3rd games (important i imagine for the remasters i expect to come out for them). it's just that it, you know, waving hands around changes the vibes of the game

Getting a bit off topic, but Dark Engine ImSim related, I know Garret says a lot in the first two Thief games, but the one word that really sticks with me is his concerned yell, "Viktoria!"

For a moment, he truly lets his guard down and shows his care for another, and I love that for him.

even doom eternal itself misunderstands the comic, turning doomguy into a comic book punisher archetype. the moment they had him say the words "rip and tear" in a cutscene i knew it was over
