I don't really know anything about WH40k but I'm having a good time with Darktide so far. The gloomy grimdark megastructures and silly tech-gothic design flourishes are up my alley, and I feel like it really nails the abject terror of throwing everything you have at a horde and still slowly losing ground.

I find the worldbuilding weirdly compelling in a bleak edgelord-y sort of way—though it probably helps that you experience it as a disillusioned nobody who is very much being thrown into the meat grinder.

Unless you're a Zealot, I guess. I'm not sure I can stand playing Zealot.

i think there's a threshold where learning more warhammer 40k does actually enhance your experience instead of bog it down and that threshold is "the Ork aliens are a bunch of Rowdy Lads who all follow loony tunes cartoon rules of physics and all the serious fascist space marines and such are very annoyed that they have to cohabit a setting with such a goofy group of dudes"
