just played a speedmap (sm222_magnetbox) where everything switches to dev texturing after a point where you undergo 'purification' and I can't tell if the author ran out of time or if it's an ingenious representation of the player's perception ascending to a state of pure abstraction

That was my exact reaction! I 100% think it was "ran out of time" but my headcanon while playing was 100% "welcome to the purified realm".
