i remember my first blue led. i got it as an engineering sample when i was in high school, it otherwise cost like $25 in single quantities and at the time it was dimmer than the really shitty red led i pulled out of the spare parts bin my dad and i kept (that red led was probably my dad's from like the early 80s).

now blue leds are everywhere. maybe too everywhere... grabs shotgun
