I'm so sick of "marriage makes you live longer" being treated as a cutesy factoid. How about "we live in a deeply alienating society that can make you so lonely you literally die, and then we tack most of the responsibility for fulfilling people's social support needs onto one very specific high-stakes social arrangement".

in reply to @DiscoDeerDiary's post:

specifically i think it said it was More true for men, like it increased their lifespans more than for women, but both increased , could have any number of explanations for that honestly (married cishet men might do less stupidly risky stuff on average? idk im too gay to know much abt cishets)

sounds like it could be "men are socially conditioned to consider themselves inherently valuable and so disregard contingency planning for being discarded and devalued by society, so only women actually plan for it"

stomping off to breathe into a paper bag whenever I think of how many people I know who got married in their 20s (and then mostly divorced in their 30s) just so they could have health insurance

... Instrumentality of Mankind, the universe Cordwainer Smith created. I thought, I thought that was what you were referring too. It's fine, it's fine, turns out I'm a nerd and no one care about my niche interest, I'll just go melt in a puddle over there. /j
