giant shout-out to jetbrains. their IDEs do it this way:
- if you have it installed stand-alone, it asks you if you want to download a new update from their website if there's one available, and doesn't ask again if you say no, but it's still accessible via the menu
- if you have toolbox, their IDE manager installed, it handles it the same way, but you can install it with one click
- if you want auto-update, you can toggle it in toolbox
- if you want to update all IDEs, there's a button in toolbox
- if you updated by accident or just don't like the update, toolbox can this (without even downloading anything!!!):
the rollback button is so nice, you can tell that they actually care about their users
also, forgot to mention this: you can even ignore all future updates forever with a toggle in toolbox:
and toolbox can move the IDE installation from one path to another with one click too. god their DX is so fucking good i am never using any other IDE ever
