the premise was this: dump 40 kids aged 8 to 15 in a desert ghost town and see if they're able to survive on their own
it was... just as ridiculously horrible an idea as it sounds

Kid Nation is right up there with Space Cadets and Solitary as mid-2000s reality shows I'm not quite sure they should have been allowed to make. Though I think Kid Nation is the only one where a group of kids decides to execute a chicken for food after being given the idea by the show's producers.
